Finding the perfect pair of shorts seems way too easy to be true right?! Wrong. I had been looking specifically for a woven pair of shorts (as many designers have only knit patterns). I wanted something that would be unique but would not have me sweating in all of the wrong areas.
I like breathable shorts that allow me to dance around with the kids when their favorite song is played or chase them around the park. I love the ability to have the option of adding a pocket (you know, a hidden one) with a nice stable waistband that won’t twist and turn or roll down – oh, and it’s also super fun when you have a similar or identical design created for your little one. There will be a time when your child no longer wants to match your style – so take full advantage of the matching phase before it ends!
Now, when Bella Sunshine Designs‘ Designer, Melissa, stated she was creating a woven tulip styled shorts for girls and ladies – I knew that this would be it. Seriously – Melissa is a rockstar when it comes to pattern designs. The testing process is intense because everything matters (which is awesome) and she is right there with you sewing up the pattern (well, virtually). The Ladies version is available for sizes 0 to 30 with the option of 3″ or 5″ inseam length. There are lines directly on the pattern pieces to allow you to shorten or length the pattern pieces to your height (I love this feature and it is on ALL of the BSD pattern designs).
I have tested for Bella Sunshine Designs before and I have never been disappointed. But – if you are curious and have never owned any of their patterns, you should try out their Reagan Raglan top for ladies and girl’s – they’re free with code from their facebook group. The shorts pair perfectly with the Reagan Raglan top by Bella Sunshine.
I actually turned the Reagan into a tank. Check it out here. I failed to mention the girl’s Tess Tulip Shorts fits sizes 6m to 12 years which offer a short and long version as well. Shown below are the short version – without hidden pockets (optional).
Okay – back to these awesome shorts. There is a gorgeous tulip petal that provides an gorgeous accent to the front and integrates into the side seams of the shorts – you can add trim or just topstitch. I love the ability to choose because sometimes, I think topstitching provides the best detail while other times, I like to add a little fun pompom or lace trim to enhance the style of the garment. The shorts sew-up quickly (under 30 minutes from cut to hem) and use roughly 1 yard of fabric or less! You can mix – you can match or whatever your heart desires! And the fit – it’s perfect.
Here are few things to note:
- This pattern is designed for woven fabric. Suggested woven fabrics include: quilting cottons, cotton poplins, denims, and bottom weight fabrics to name a few.
- Woven Fusible Interfacing is needed for the waistband (so not a lot will be used)
- 1” (2.5cm) – for girls; 1.25″ for ladies of Braided Elastic
- 1/4”-1” (0.5cm-2.5cm) Lace or pom pom trim (Optional)
Now how about some fun inspiration….
What are you waiting for?! Sew-up a pair or two…or even more…
