The Sunkissed Romper and Dress has an open back with tie straps. I tested this dress for Designer Mandalynn and Assistant Designer Ashley over at Striped Swallow Designs. The pattern was for this dress was designed for cotton woven, but did you know it sews up beautifully in knit fabrics too?! This gorgeous dress is a quick sew and took under 1 hour for each one to be completed. The pattern is designed to fit girls sizes 2T to 14. (I plan on making a few for myself in size 14…Shhh).
My first dress I made was a size 4T and I completed it using woven fabric from Joann Fabric’s – a local fabric chain store. I had found an end of bolt woven piece of a gorgeous zebra fabric and matching solid black. Kids can be super picky – so I try to pick fabric pieces that they would really enjoy. And once all sewn together, I was thrilled!! I am pretty sure ribbon or other fun lace would work well for the straps, maybe even a fun trim! Neither of my bodices included trim and I did not use any bias tape (which is totally optional – although I did have some at hand) I wanted to make sure everything matched! The fit was perfect, the back was open, the ties were great and no fuss for when she had to use the bathroom.
So, I decided to experiment with a knit fabric, another size 4T – I used single brushed rayon spandex (navy) for my bodice, all casing, and tabs; for the skirt and straps I used double brushed poly. All of my fabric for this dress was purchased from Knitpop.
Once it was completed, it was even more gorgeous then I had even imagined. Don’t worry though, if you are debating between cotton woven or knit – you can mix and/or match or just one throughout! The twirl factor is great and the dress is perfect to stay cool on a hot Summer day.
I guess I forgot to mention the enclosed back option….This was added on right before the pattern released and MY OH MY it is glorious! I just adore how the watermelon fabric worked perfectly for this.
